How does an eSIM work?

Updated over a month ago

An eSIM is a digital SIM profile stored on a secure chip (eUICC) inside your device, no physical card needed. Carriers (like ORA partners 3HK or Sparks) issue these profiles, and you download them via a QR code.

  1. 📥 Download & Install

    • Scanning the ORA QR code tells your phone where to fetch the carrier’s eSIM credentials.

    • Your device then installs that profile onto the eUICC without needing a SIM tray.

  2. 🔄 Activation & Network Registration

    • After installation, enable Data Roaming for the eSIM in Settings → Cellular (iOS) or SIM card manager(Android).

    • Once you arrive in a covered region, the eSIM registers on the local network automatically—no further steps required.

  3. 🗂️ Multiple Profiles, One Chip

    • The eUICC can store several eSIM profiles (home and travel plans).

    • You toggle between them in settings; only one handles data at a time, but calls/texts on another can still come through if your phone supports Dual SIM Dual Standby.

In short, an eSIM embeds your carrier credentials digitally, scan a QR, install the profile, enable roaming, and you’re online instantly when you land. 😊
